Autumn Term

Autumn Term

This term in Year 6 we have two topic areas:  World War Two and Rivers and river systems. As part of the World War Two topic we will be holding an Evacuee Day at school on 19 November and visiting Wisley RHS Gardens to take part in a "Dig for Victory" workshop on 25 November.  In literacy we will also be looking at texts and poems relating to the war.  As part of our rivers topic, we will be visiting Dapdune Wharf, in Guildford, on 15 October where the children will take part in a series of workshops to inform them of the workings and importance of rivers.

As part of our numeracy focus we will be looking at place value, ordering and rounding numbers. We will also look at the properties of numbers by working out number sequences and at various pencil and paper procedures for solving number problems.

In science this term we will be focussing on changing state and reversible and irreversible changes. We will then look at How We See in the second half of the term, focussing on light and the ways in which impacts on our day to day lives.

Year 6 will be looking at spreadsheets and multimedia presentations in ICT this term, and will be visiting Broadwater to experience ICT in a secondary context!  In PSCHE we will be looking at 'new beginnings', 'local democracy' and being involved in a community.

In art we will be exposed to the work of Clarice Cliff and the children will produce printing work based on the designs and inspiration of her work. In DT we will be taking part in the Young Engineer project which is led by two local engineers from a local construction company, who work with us to design and build models of bridges.

As part of the RE focus this term, we will be looking at the Trinity, key celebrations and general belief systems about God and Jesus.

In PE we will be taking part in gymnastic and dance activities using the river topic as a stimulus. We will also be taking part in net and invasion games which will use tennis and tag rugby as the main focus.

In music, we will be exploring rounds and sound sources, and will be creating our own piece of music inspired by our World War 2 topic!

ALL IN ALL A FUN FILLED, ACTION PACKED AUTUMN TERM!
